Man-Up Mondays!

Well, since last week’s Man-Up was so half assed, I thought I’d try a little harder this time. And as The Wife said, “It’s time you maned-up on your Man-Up!”

I can think of many men who deserve the honor of gracing AWESOMENESS, but only one that can inspire fear and dread in the steeliest of hearts…

Joseph J. Spagnuolo

Oct. 1936 – Jan. 1989
Cause of death: Heart attack? Bled to death due to hemophiliac suicide? Asthma attack? Who knows?

Joe Spinell (as most of us know him) has been in over 60 films…he’s been directed by the best (Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, William Friedkin, William Lustig) and performed alongside superstars (Clint Howard, Robert Forster, Rutger Hauer, David Hasselhoff) from 1972 all the way up until his death in 1989. Let’s take a looksee at 4 amazing films you’ve probably seen our man of the day in.

Critic Favorite: The Godfather films as Willi Cicci

Get this, Look what I found out thanks to Wiki: “Willie Cicci was originally one of the major characters in The Godfather Part III, but was written out and replaced by Joey Zasa following the death of actor Joe Spinell.” Man, thank God Joe didn’t have to be in that pile of crap.

Gorehound Favorite: Maniac as Frank Zito

2 bits of trivia (from Wiki of course):
-“The song Maniac was written by Michael Sembello and Dennis Matkosky, after Matkosky had been inspired by the film. Its lyrics about a killer were rewritten so that it could be used in the 1983 film Flashdance. The song’s use in Flashdance earned it an Academy Award nomination, but it was disqualified when it emerged that the song had not been written specifically for the film.

-“Film critic Gene Siskel vociferously described how sickened he was by the film on Sneak Previews, and walked out thirty minutes into the movie (after the shotgun murder scene), saying the film “could not redeem itself” after the amount of violence shown up to that point.

Nerd Favorite: Starcrash as Count Zarth Arn

Wiki sez, “Ground-breaking in its use of special effects, Starcrash is one of the most successful films of all time and is generally considered one of the most influential as well.

Forget all that, “Lucas was influenced by Campbell, Kurosawa, Kubrick, Riefenstahl, and all the rest” bullcrap…he stole everything from Luigi Cozzi and he knows it!

Canacorn Favorite: Cruising as Patrolman DiSimone

I can’t gush about this movie any more than I already have…If you haven’t seen it, you are missing out on one of the best Al Pacino movies of all time.

Oh snap! I just found out that Cruising has been reimagined with dolls…it’s called BOY TOYS….and you can watch it on YouTube, of course!

Check this shit out….A clip from THE JOE SPINELL STORY (A movie I am dying to see!)

You da man, Joe! Rest In Peace!

Canacorn…out!

Two For Tuesdays

I was not familiar with R&B singer / songwriter DON COVAY until last week. A fellow employee at the record store popped on a greatest hits cd that stopped me in my tracks. Don had that great storytelling ability with minute attention to detail* I’ve only noticed in R. Kelly’s greatest efforts.

This one has become my personal favorite:

SOMEBODY’S BEEN ENJOYING MY HOME

He drank the last six pack of beer?! That bastard!

While poking around for Mr. Covay songs I came across this little gem about…..JAWS?!

SIX MILLION DOLLAR FISH

Wow…

*See: I WAS CHECKIN’ OUT…
