Sublime Frequencies

1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground

1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground

This is the latest LP I’ve purchased from the Sublime Frequencies label. They put out tons of quality world music that will melt your brains…here’s how they describe themselves:

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is a collective of explorers dedicated to acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers via film and video, field recordings, radio and short wave transmissions, international folk and pop music, sound anomalies, and other forms of human and natural expression not documented sufficiently through all channels of academic research, the modern recording industry, media, or corporate foundations. SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is focused on an aesthetic of extra-geography and soulful experience inspired by music and culture, world travel, research, and the pioneering recording labels of the past…

Uh, okay, nerds….could y’all sound any nerdier?

But I guess it’s their adventures in nerdiness that make these records and cds so goddamn awesome. Seriously, it’s like these guys are the Indiana Joneses of the music industry…if it wasn’t for them I would have never even heard of Omar Souleyman never mind own the Highway To Hassake cd…or the truly awesome Radio Thailand: Transmissions from the Tropical Kingdom cd!

Who else is going to bring you an album by a man that sings lyrics whispered to him by a chain smoking poet and a 2 cd set of Thai radio transmissions from 1989-2004?

Oh, um, back to the LP in the picture! 1970’s Algerian Proto-Rai Underground is a collection Rai music from the 70s (in case you didn’t already figure that one out from the title)…and it’s another great album of music I never would have heard if it wasn’t for Sublime Frequencies.

But what in the Hell is Rai music anyway? Well, I really don’t have time to go into a history lesson here so feel free to click THIS and read about Rai music to your heart’s content….which really means, “I dunno.”

But what I do know is this: Any band that looks this fucking good has to make beautiful music.

pboutique-001 Has it really been 20 years since a teenage Mr. Canacorn went to the mall to buy one of his most cherished records of all time?

I know I’ve been talking about some of my more recent LP purchases the past couple of days, but today is kind of special, so I’m going to spotlight an old record…

Paul’s Boutique by The Beastie Boys and The Dust Brothers (including Matt Dike) just might be my all time favorite record ever made.

pboutique-002 I couldn’t stop listening to this record for a year straight back in 89 and I still revisit it in one form or another to this day.

Lyrically it’s a ton of fun and with over a hundred samples packed into 15 tracks it never bores me. In fact, I just downloaded a commentary track from the Beastie‘s site, just in case I didn’t learn everything I possibly could about PB from Dan Leroy’s 33 1/3 book back in 06.

And really, it’s the only double gatefold record I own…still…to this day. And how cool is that?

Pretty fucking cool, old man…pretty fucking cool.

I just purchased this amazing 1971 record (sound unheard) the other day based on the cover alone.

Look closely at the center picture…here, I’ll help:

That’s a 10 year old playing guitar behind his head while doing the splits!!!!

I wish you could hear the sheer brilliance of this junior funk masterpiece…oh wait…here’s a Myspace page for Jr.

These kids can play…Jr’s picking is pretty tight, but the girls steal the show on most songs with their dueling organ techniques…I mean, what’s cooler than a six year old girl slamming away at a WAW-WAW organ on songs called “MOMMA, LOVE TEQUILLA” and “THING, DO THE CREEP“? Beats me…but as of this morning…nothing.

And if you’re all techno savvy or whatever I believe this site has provided a way to download the album HERE.

Seriously, get hip to this shit.
